National focus[edit | edit source]
- Main article: Hungarian national focus tree
The Kingdom of Hungary, along with three other nations situated between
Germany and the
Soviet Union, gets a unique national focus tree as part of the Death or Dishonor expansion. Without the expansion, Hungary utilizes the Generic national focus tree instead.
The Hungarian national focus tree can be divided into 3 branches and 6 sub-branches:
- Balanced Budget/Economic Intervention Branch
- This branch allows Hungary to change its political stance.
- Strengthen the Monarchists Sub-branch
- This branch allows Hungary to end the regency and elect either a
Democratic king (Carl V Wilhelm of
Sweden), a
Fascist king (Friedrich Franz of Mecklenburg-Schwerin of
Germany), or a
Non-Aligned Habsburg king (Otto von Habsburg of
Austria) as their ruler.
- The Democratic king means closer ties with
Sweden and either joining the
United Kingdom and the Allies or allying with
Romania.
- The Fascist king means aligning more with
Germany and the Axis and striving to create a
Greater Hungary. This sub-branch joins the Strengthen Fascists Sub-branch.
- The Non-Aligned Habsburg king is the most unusual, as it involves starting an endeavour to rebuild the fallen
Austro-Hungarian Empire by reuniting with
Austria and
Czechoslovakia (and there fore opposing and resisting German designs for said countries) and generating claims on lost lands in
Yugoslavia,
Romania,
Poland and northern
Italy. The end of the sub-branch awards even more claims on territories in
Germany,
France and central
Italy.
- Strengthen Fascists Sub-branch
- This branch allows Hungary to become
Fascist and create a
Greater Hungary and either join the Axis or create their own faction with
Italy.
- Council of People's Commissars Sub-branch
- This branch allows Hungary to become
Communist and join the
Soviet Union and the Comintern.
- Industrial Revitalization Branch
- This branch allows Hungary to develop its industry and unlock research slots. One of its sub-branches is connected to the Establish the Air-Force sub-branch.
- Secret Rearmament Branch
- This branch allows Hungary to cast off the Treaty of Trianon and start researching military tech.
- Establish the Air-Force Sub-branch
- This sub-branch allows the research and licensing of the Airforce.
- Army Maneuvers Sub-branch
- This sub-branch gives research bonuses for various types of Army equipment.
- Naval Warfare Sub-branch
- This sub-branch deals with the Navy but requires that Hungary controls a coastal state as they lack one in 1936.

Ideology[edit | edit source]
Hungary starts in 1936 as a non-aligned country with an election in March of 1939. The ruling party in 1936 is the F48P and its leader is Miklós Horthy. Hungary in the 1939 game start is a fascist country.
National spirits[edit | edit source]
Without the Death or Dishonor DLC enabled, Hungary starts with no national spirits. With the Death or Dishonor DLC enabled, Hungary starts off with the Treaty of Trianon, which disarms Hungary. This can be removed by either negotiating with the Little Entente, proposing the Bled Agreement, or by renouncing it if you choose the fascist route of the tree.
Political Parties[edit | edit source]
Diplomacy[edit | edit source]
Hungary begins with claims on Czechoslovakia's territory, namely in Southern Slovakia and Carpathian Ruthenia.

Hungary's military mostly consists of 14 Infantry divisions (one division made up by 6 INF battalions), 2 Cavalry divisions (4 CAV battalion and a Recon company), and a small air force. However, all of these divisions are at less than half-strength, as Hungary has a mere 52 men in reserve at the start of the game.

Strategies and guides[edit | edit source]

Greater Hungary[edit | edit source]
Strategy Needed. Please write when available.
Austria-Hungary[edit | edit source]
When playing Hungary, there are two achievements the player can gain: ‘Miklos Horthy and the Habsburg Prince’ and ‘Better than the Szent István’. Let's look at the Habsburg Prince achievement. For one, the player needs to follow the Balanced Budget branch of the focus and elect Otto von Habsburg to the Habsburg throne. Then the player needs to demand a referendum for unification with
Austria, and there are two outcomes: war or unification. To peacefully unify, the player must spend political power to improve relations between you and Austria and they must have a very good opinion of you by the referendum. If Austria peacefully unifies, that means they have voted to reunite. If Austria denies the referendum, then go to war. Put your troops on the border and head for the cities. Capturing Vienna and Salzburg will end the war quickly enough for you to annex it before Germany does the Anschluss. From there, you can proclaim the restoration of
Austria-Hungary. As Hungary is the new dominant constituent in the empire this time, your capital will stay in Budapest. Afterward, put your attention on
Czechoslovakia and improve relations with them as much as possible. This is required as the Protect Czechoslovakia focus gives Czechoslovakia a decision to decline, become an associate or to reintegrate back into the empire. You need them to at least become an associate, thus improving relations with them is necessary. Rinse and repeat for Romania through the Claim Transylvania focus. Then right after demanding Transylvania, you generate a war goal on Yugoslavia (Romania will refuse, giving you a short-lived buff that allows generating war goals regardless of world tension), and declare war. Being at war gets rid of the Treaty of Trianon, so you should have some saved up
political power to change conscription & economy laws. If Romania ceded all of Transylvania, you can reintegrate the empire after annexing Yugoslavia, giving you cores on most of your new territory and on some Italian states, if they didn't, you have to pick the March to the Shore focus to get some claims on Italy for later. While Hitler will demand Sudetenland (most likely early in 1939), it is possible to avoid war by fortifying your border with Germany (at least level 4 forts, though higher is better) and having a large enough air force to protect them from bombers—this does require a huge industrial investment however, an alternative approach is temporarily parting with the Sudetenland (preferably after dismantling its forts) and spend that time expanding your industry instead. After a few months, Hitler should get into a war with the Allies. At this point, you've probably generated too much world tension to be allowed into the Allies, but you can join the war soon after by generating a war goal for one of your cores or claims in Italy. After Hitler breaks the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact, you can join Comintern to get Stalin's aid in conquering states from Britain & France later on.
To get Better Than Szent István, the most straightforward way is to construct dockyards (e.g. in Yugoslavia) and build a battleship, though contrary to the achievement's description, you don't have to build the battleship yourself, acquiring one by puppeting & annexing a naval power like Italy or Britain also works (assuming the Together for Victory DLC is active). This achievement is currently bugged and cannot be attained. Admiral Horthy has the wrong character id and is not recognized by the achievement.
With historical AI disabled, the fastest way is to invade Germany first. Head north, take the cities and annex Germany. This will get you two provinces closer. Next, invade France. Just heading into the Maginot Line is going to be a suicide mission, so head through Belgium (Schlieffen 2: Electric Boogaloo) and Britain is almost certainly going to guarantee France or Belgium, so you can also bring down Britain with them. And Italy might just join the Axis to bog you down, so hoping that the Austro-Hungarian military has been built up significantly, you can do a mass invasion of Western Europe. Getting to Paris will bring down the French, and they will surrender after about half of the country is occupied. Then go around Switzerland to Italy's western border and attack. This will be a surprise attack for the Italians, so rush down the peninsula and do a naval invasion of Palestine and Lebanon. Go down to Egypt, seize the Suez Canal (you should also have seized Malta and Cyprus by now) and march into Algeria. Once you have Algiers, navally invade Gibraltar. This will make supply lines to the British Raj and the Antipodes longer and costlier, weakening the eastern half of the British Empire. Then put all your troops on the north coast of France and navally invade England. When the treaties come, take as much land as possible and what you also need for the achievement. As soon as you hold all the provinces necessary, you can get the achievement.
For the rest of the achievement, you have to do some invasions. You need Franche-Comté, Lombardy, Emiliano Romagna, Tuscany, Oberschlesien, Lebanon, Palestine, all of Hungary, all of Austria, and all of Czechoslovakia to get the achievement. Completing the rest of the Habsburg Prince achievement means war with Italy, Germany, France and Britain.
With the free update during the release of La Résistance, Otto von Habsburg come with a leader modifier of -40 percent world tension requirement to begin justifying war claims. This means that world tension only needs to be at 10% to start claiming on countries. Going the path of Austria-Hungary, you gain claims on :Austria, Czechoslovakia, Romania, Yugoslavia, Poland, Germany, Italy, the United Kingdom, and France. However, you only need Austria, Czechoslovakia, Romania, and Yugoslavia to get the cores for Austria-Hungary.
For a straight forward aggressive strategy for an easy win for this achievement, first, go down the Balanced Budget tree to Invite the Habsburg Prince Then to skip the Secret Rearment and Bled Agreement, enact Demand a Referendum but instead of allowing Austria to accept, try to make them disagree then declare invade them. This should save up time and allow the player to build up troops and industry faster. Build up troops with the new manpower after Austria surrendered and station all of them at
Czechoslovakia border and the moment the player starts Protect Czechoslovakia, improve relationship with them. This should allow the player to annex them most of the time. Then follow the focus tree as normal. Wait till fall or winter to start Claim Transylvania and improve relationship with
Germany and hope
Romania to refuse while calling
Germany to war. This will start the war with the Allies. Once Germany joined the war, the player will need to join the Axis. Note that the moment Romania refused, this will give the player a shortlived buff of -50% claim speed for war. Either use this to claim on
Yugoslavia or just go down the focus March to the Shore later depends on how early the player wants to kickstart the war with them. Both moves should be different by a few days. Once the claim for Yugoslavia is done, make a new claim on
Bulgaria Once Yugoslavia fell, declare war on Bulgaria. Then enact the focus Claim Galicia and make sure
Poland fall. Take their lands This will give the player the industry needed for the war with the Allies. Build at least 24 paratroopers 1W division and help Germany to take France, then from Dunkirk, airdrop them to English port near the capital and make sure to drop 2 brigades on each land and ports to make a beachhead before sending your invasion force over. Capitulate England and win the war with the Allies, take what's needed.
Then wait for Germany to declare war on the Soviet Union But do not join, wait for Germany and perhaps Italian troops to be deep in Russia, but DO NOT I repeat DO NOT let Germany in too deep to the point the Soviet can't fight back. At least keep the Soviet border with Hungary intact. Leave the Axis Faction and justify on Vichy France. This is important because Germany and Italy will not station troops over the border with the player. This will give an early edge in the war. Once the justification is completed, declare war and take the early surprise then hold the line so not only the player troops are well protected, they also get reinforcement from the Soviet and save their manpower that way. With some luck, the Axis might even fight a defensive war against the Japanese. Wait until the Axis are all wear out from the war due to lack of resources, FINISH THEM and take what is needed.
An alternate strategy that involves less RNG is available if one has La Resistance - build an intelligence agency, put one of the starting military factories to Transport Planes, and research Paratroopers (as well as Fighter 1). Do 5 upgrades (Invisible Ink, Suicide Pills, Diplomatic Training, and any other two upgrades that require 5 civs) and as soon as you have 150 pp, hire a Silent workhorse. Use your first spy to keep an eye on what Germany is up to, and once you get a second spy, use that to infiltrate Germany's civilian government, then start applying diplomatic pressure with them (if you upgrade the economy/civilian department, you should be able to get their focus name, and can use one of your neighbors as a reference for how many days Germany has left on their focus) . Rush Invite the Hapsburg Prince, but do not demand a referendum right away - instead, do Secret Rearmament (going to Partial Mobilization ASAP after this focus), Industrial Revitalization, and Reintegrate the Railroads, all while boosting relations with Austria and applying diplomatic pressure. Afterwards, take Demand a Referendum - this should result in them agreeing to be annexed. Afterwards, check on what Germany is doing - because you annexed Austria, this will cause them to go off the rails. Restore Austria-Hungary through the focus afterwards (make sure to change your occupation laws), and start training paratroopers with high priority (if you send an attache to China, or hired a military theorist by the time you had your second batch of 150 PP, you should have enough Army XP to make them all 1 division; if you don't have the population or equipment, disband 2 of the units you got when Austria joined peacefully) - 8 should be enough - and prepare Collaboration Governments in Romania (2 should be enough; 3 is too expensive). When Germany starts doing Reassert Eastern Claims, do not take any focuses until they complete that focus and instead focus on boosting relations + applying diplomatic pressure with Czechoslovakia - get a non-aggression pact with the Czechs to get their approval rating higher (normally it can only get to +15 thanks to all the claims you have on their territory; with the NAP, it can get to +40). Afterwards, pay attention to what Germany does, and wait for them to start a focus before you start one (thanks to the 10 days you have banked up, you can afford to wait); when they do Demand Sudetenland, start Protect Czechoslovakia, while making sure you have max relations with Germany and the Czechs - apply diplomatic pressure to the former to get a non-aggression pact (do this right before they complete Demand Sudetenland to make the pact last as long as possible; if you wait until after they complete the focus to try and get an NAP, they'll have a negative modifier towards you that will stop you from getting it). The Czechs should agree to be annexed as opposed to refusing or merely becoming a puppet, and you can refuse Germany's demand for Sudetenland without fear of them attacking you (note that if you complete the focus after Germany does Demand Sudetenland, Poland will take Zaolzie; if this happens, you can wait until you capitulate the Allies, then go after Poland, since for whatever reason, the Germans will never take Zaolzie in a peace deal).
Afterwards, take Claim Transylvania, and approach either Germany or France (the former will give you North Transylvania anyways through Second Vienna award, while the latter will be most likely to give you all of it) - while it's more likely that you'll only get North Transylvania than all of it or none of it (Romania will always refuse your demands unless you somehow have overwhelmingly more forces than they do, which you shouldn't unless you took Austria by force), what actually you want to do is, when the Romanians refuse, use the spirit you get to justify a war goal on Yugoslavia (anywhere will do) - by this point, if historical is on, France will have cancelled it's guarantee on Yugoslavia, meaning that the only other country that is still guaranteeing Yugoslavia is Romania. Afterwards, regardless of what you get from the negotiations (if you get nothing, just select the option that doesn't result in you declaring war), deploy your Transport planes (by now, you should have 20 and enough population to get them in the airfield), and stage paradrops into the Romanian victory points - if you've gotten at least 2 collaboration governments in Romania, you should be able to capitulate them relatively close to the day after you take their victory points. When you declare war on Yugoslavia, Romania will be called in, but not France - during the peace deal, take the states that make up Transylvania (North Transylvania if you didn't already get it, Banat, Transylvania, and Crisana), either directly take or liberate Moldova (so that way you don't have to fight the Soviet Union; it's not required, and it doesn't have any resources), and then either annex or puppet the rest. As for Yugoslavia, when they fall, take all of the states - while Bulgaria will take territory from you when you join the Axis, none of the states they take are cores. Re-integrate the empire.
By this point, World War 2 has kicked off - justify and declare on the Allies, and then join the Axis. Use paratroopers to gain a foothold in the UK, and take their victory points. In the peace deal, take the required French and British territories (Franche-Comte, Jordan, and Palestine). Then, declare war on and annex Vichy France (attack from Franche-Comte) - no other country will guarantee them since they're fascist, and since you're still in the Axis, you can attack them without fear of them calling in the Germans. After defeating them, Satellite Free France (if you puppet Vichy France, their focus will have them join the Axis) and return the French lands you have to your Free French Puppet (so that way, the Germans can't occupy it when you go to war with them). When the Axis go to war with the Soviets, wait until they're a good way in before leaving and justifying on them - because Italy and Germany are both majors in a war, you can justify quickly on them. Attack and optionally join the ComIntern (ideally the Soviets still have a border with you so they can send their forces to help you). During the peace deal, ta3ke the required German (Neiderschlesien and Oberschleisien) and Italian (Tuscany, Lombardy, Emilia Romagna, and South Tyrol - while the last one isn't required for the achievement, it is one of your cores) territories. You don't have to fight the Soviets for any territory if they don't take or puppet any of the states required for the achievement (the only thing the Soviets would demand from you is Bessarabia, and that's not required), Japan will leave you alone if you didn't puppet the Dutch East Indies or British Malaya, and the United States won't pick a fight with you - just focus on re-annexing France through the annexation system. Feel free to build a battleship by this point for the other achievement if you didn't already have one from puppeting the British.
