Soviet Union
The Soviet Union (officially “Union of Soviet Socialist Republics” or “USSR”) is a major country and the leader of the Comintern faction. It is rich in both natural and human resources and has decent technology. It controls almost the entire northern third of Asia as well as the eastern edges of Europe.
Geography[edit | edit source]
The Soviet Union is a massive country, stretching from the barren wastelands of Kamchatka to the warm, fertile fields of Ukraine. Much of the north and east is forest, with polar regions of Siberia marshlands and plains. There is little mountains or hills besides the Caucasus and Ural ranges. The south is primarily plains, with a few urban provinces dispersed throughout the country.

Diplomacy[edit | edit source]
As the premier communist nation in 1936, the Soviet Union is the head of the Comintern, consisting of Tannu Tuva and
Mongolia.
Communist China,
Sinkiang and
Paraguay are the only other countries that have a favorable view.
Should Republican Spain prevail in the Spanish Civil War, it may be amenable to joining, as would a communist-aligned
France.
If Leon Trotsky becomes leader of the USSR and Permanent Revolution and NKVD Primacy are taken, then the USSR can start Communist civil wars in countries without having to spend any Political Power.

1936 Scenario The player starts the game with 1.25M in manpower available and the monthly gain for manpower is 2.95k. The player starts with the Volunteer Only conscription law, providing 1.50% of the player's core population as manpower, totaling 2.42M. 1.13M of this manpower at game start is tied up in the army, 30.68k in the air force and 33.25k in the navy. The Soviet Union has a population of 161.43 million.

1936 Scenario: The player begins the game with 91 Infantry divisions, of which 18 are Reserve NKVD Divisions with Military Police. Additionally, the player has 22 Cavalry divisions, 13 Mountaineer divisions, 11 light tank divisions and 1 Motorized Infantry division. The player begins the game producing Infantry Equipment I at 36.19/day with 7 factories; Support Equipment I at 1.29/day on 2 factories; Towed Artillery at 5.17/week on 1 factory; Light Tank I at 6.78/week on 3 factories; and Motorized at 3.04/day on 3 factories. However, Motorized units lack rubber and have a penalty to production speed. The player has 14 additional military factories that can be allotted to production. The army is fairly average in the beginning, but the Soviet doctrine tree gives them a higher reinforce chance as well as either Large Front Operations or People's Army. It is up to the player upon reaching those decision points as to which line to pursue.
Examples of alternative division template names for the Soviet Union include:
- Mountaineers - Gornostrelkovaya Diviziya
- Marines - Morskaya Pekhota
- Paratroopers - Vozdushno-Desantnaya Diviziya
- Motorized - Motostrelkovaya Diviziya
- Mechanized - Mekhanizirovanaya Diviziya
- Armor - Tankovaya Diviziya or Tankovyj Korpus

1936 Scenario: The player starts the game with only 3 Battleships, 4 Light Cruisers, 17 Destroyers and 43 Submarines. For production, the player only has 6 naval dockyards to begin with. The players dockyards are initially producing 4 Leningrad & Minsk Class 1936 Destroyers and 31 Series IX Srednyaya Submarines, the latter across four separate production lines. While the player can cancel these productions, the first of the four destroyers is set to be completed by April 19th, 1936 and two of the Submarine lines are set to complete another sub by February 8th, 1936, so to avoid any loss of time and production, simply finish these in production before canceling or changing the lines to a different ship class. Naval technology at game start in 1936 includes all of the early ship classes except for carriers, but only one 1936 ship class. The Soviets also start with the Naval Doctrine Fleet in Being, providing +10 organization to Battleships, Battlecruisers, and Heavy Cruisers.

1936 Scenario: The player begins in 1936 with 0 close air support, 658 fighters, 108 naval bombers, 0 heavy fighters, 240 tactical bombers, 72 strategic bombers and 0 transport planes. However, more than half of the fighter fleet are I-15s, with fewer than 200 I-16s in service. For production, the Soviet Union is only producing fighters with a single factory for 3.14/month and strategic bombers for 1.23/month on a single factory. The player lacks rubber, which reduces production speed. Obtaining rubber via trade should be one of the player's first priorities. For technology, the Soviets begin with 1936 fighters, naval bombers and strategic bombers. tactical bombers are outdated 1933 models. The player lacks the technology for heavy fighters and close air support. The player does not begin with any air doctrine in 1936 and has full choice over any of the three branches.

Strategies and guides[edit | edit source]
Stalin's Great Purges[edit | edit source]
This is a guide about Stalins great purges, which happens when the appropriate focuses (The Zinovyevite Terrorist Center, The Anti-Soviet Trotskyist Center, The Military Conspiracy, The Bloc of Rights and Trotskyites) finish (and it assumes you follow the centre path, some of the other paths might change who gets purged). After each one you get an unavoidable purge of several characters. The characters purged are always the same, unless a random purge already purged one of those characters earlier via the paranoia system, or if they are exiled. If the character was already purged, a random character will be picked. So the amount of people purged cannot be reduced.
- The first purge kills: Grigory Zinovyev, Lev Kamenev, Ivan Smirnov, Grigory Sokolnikov, Aleksandr Shlyapnikov
- The second purge kills: Karl Radek, Ivar Smilga, Yevgeny Preobrazhensky, Martemyan Ryutin, and if you own No Step Back, Nikolay Ustryalov
- The third purge, the military purge kills: Mikhail Tukhachevsky, Aleksandr Yegorov, Vasily Blyukher, Vitaly Primakov
- The last purge kills: Nikolay Bukharin, Aleksey Rykov, Mikhail Tomsky, Maksim Litvinov
After a great purge event fires, a random purge event cannot happen for 15 days.

Overthrowing Stalin and putting Bukharin in charge[edit | edit source]
With No Step Back released, one notable option available to players who stay communist is the ability to get rid of Stalin without a civil war if they go down the Right Opposition Path. However, this is very risky, since you need to assassinate Stalin before Beria becomes head of the NKVD, and should Paranoia get above 90, the civil war will fire. But if you want Russia to avoid another civil war, read on.
First, one should decide one thing: if they want to be cooperative with the Left Opposition, or if they wish to save the generals Stalin historically purges. This will determine focus order. Regardless, the first 3 focuses one should take are The Path of Marx-Leninism, Right Opposition, and The Need for Policy Changes - for the political power you get, either hire Mikhail Kalinin or take Improved Worker Conditions for a much needed stability boost (note that until Bukharin is in charge, you will not be able to earn much political power - although you can somewhat offset this by infiltrating the civilian governments of other countries; if playing on ahistorical, there's a chance Turkey might back down when you mobilize the armed forces in response to them remilitarizing the Bosporus, thus giving you some stability and political power). After that, take Infiltrate the NKVD and Gain Support from Party Members, then go up to Partial Mobilization, and round it off with Divert Attention Towards the Military - while you might think that Eliminate the Left is a good idea if not working with the Left Opposition, doing so will boost Paranoia, so it's best avoided. However, if you want to attack another country, consider holding off to see if you can go for War Economy instead of Partial Mobilization after justifying.
While this may seem like you will not finish the latter before the Zinovyevite Terror Center finishes, the game will prioritize the player's focus as long as it completes on the same day (and both of the latter focuses will bypass the Terror Center). Additionally, if we take the focus that bypasses the aforementioned Center focus before, Stalin will merely speed up his focuses, whereas if we let it play out but not finish, he'll be on the same track but we'll be closer. While it might seem ideal to purge army officers because of how many you have, if you need to lower paranoia, focus on purging the navy - while you have more generals, the navy is not as important to the Soviet Union as it is to the British or Japanese. Generate new admirals as needed, and also forge production reports if you don't have the option to purge an admiral. Only purge officers if you have no other choice.
It should be noted that while Beria will be the one who can lock off the bloodless coup, if Yagoda is purged, he will be replaced with Nikolay Yezhov - this is both good and bad, since while doing so will significantly lower paranoia, Yezhov will generate more paranoia on a weekly basis than Yagoda does (and he also lowers Stability more). The best case scenario would be Yagoda getting purged late (if he gets purged at all), but as long as you can attempt to eliminate Stalin before Yezhov is purged, you're in the clear. Note that you can decline to purge Yezhov, but doing so will boost paranoia and cost you some political power.
Anyways, what happens next also depends on who you want to save.
- If you are going to save the generals who get purged, rush towards Plan for the Coup.
- If you are planning on saving the advisors, take Cooperation against Stalin, and either Align the Zinovyevites or Liberate Ryuten - you hypothetically have time for both, but the more time you waste, the more chance you risk of Stalin purging advisors who you otherwise would save. Afterwards, rush Plan for the Coup.
Regardless, as soon as Plan for the Coup is finished, immediately click the decision to sway the head of the NKVD to your cause, and take Dissent in the Party. It should finish before the NKVD head is swayed to your cause, so go straight for Coup 'etat, and clicking the decision to eliminate Stalin. You have an 80% chance of Stalin dying this way - consider disbanding the entire army beforehand if he survives, since you'll likely get a civil war afterwards. However, if he does die, congrats! But you're not out of the woods just yet - Lavrentiy Beria, who will replace Stalin, will continue down the Centre path, and should he finish Secure the Administration, the Bloodless coup option will be locked out, in which case, all your work will have been for naught. Afterwards, all that's left is to take either Return Democracy to the Party or The Enemies of the State to remove the Trotskyite Plot debuff.
