The Second Spanish Republic is a Republican Regime that came to power in 1931, historically preceded by the Restoration and followed by Francoist Spain after the Spanish Civil War. They are located in the Iberia region of Southwest Europe.
+
Republican Spain is a minor power located on the Iberian Peninsula, bordering Portugal to the west, France to the northeast, the Mediterranean Sea around the south to the west, the Atlantic Ocean to the north and northwest, and the United Kingdom by its colonial holding of Gibraltar. Republican Spain also borders France via Spain's colonial holdings in Spanish Africa, Rio de Oro and Equatorial Guinea.

Spain lies in Southwestern Europe, with most of its land being on the Iberian peninsula. 1930s Spain also comprises the Balearic Islands and African territory and Islands. Parts of North Africa, namely the Rio de Oro region of modern-day Marocco, Western Sahara, Equatorial Guinea and the Canary Islands off the coast of Northwest Africa is owned and controlled by Spain.

+
Spain is dominated by mountainous and hilly terrain, and mainland Spain is very uneven, with 45 percent of it being covered by the Meseta Plateau. The plateau is rarely flat, with many uneven hills, mountains, and highlands. Spain contains many significant mountain ranges including the Baetic Mountains in the south, the Central and Iberian Chain in the center, and Cantabrian and Pyrenees Mountain ranges in the northwest and northeast respectively. There is also the fertile Andalusian Plain and other basins. There are many large coastal plains, with bays, coves, and sandy beaches. Along the Bay of Biscay there are large coastal, rugged cliffs. The Strait of Gibraltar separates Spain and Europe from Africa, specifically Morocco, with the closest points being only 13 km apart. Finally, mainland Spain contains over 1,500 rivers of which are mostly small. Significant rivers are the Duero, Ebro and Guadalquivir.
+

+
Spain shares a long border with its neighbor Portugal which makes up the rest of the Iberian peninsular. It borders France in the north, with the tall Pyrenees mountain range making a natural border between the two nations and in the south through their African colonies. Spain also borders United Kingdom in the south with British controlled Gibraltar.
+

+
Spain has multiple important borders to bodies of water, such as the Mediterranean Sea, Strait of Gibraltar, Atlantic Ocean and Bay of Biscay.

The Second Spanish Republic was proclaimed when King Alfonso XIII left the country following municipal elections in which leftist candidates won the majority of votes, and the Spanish population celebrated the beginning of the Second Republic and social pressure made the political regime change. Niceto Alcalá-Zamora became the Prime Minister, but the victory of the left-wing was nullified in 1934, when José Maria Gil-Robles of the right-wing CEDA faction was swept into power, and started to purge the military of leftists. In 1936, Manuel Azaña of the Popular Front, a coalition of left-wingers, narrowly became the Prime Minister, and the right-wing officers in the military plotted a coup which took place in July 1936. The Republican government went into exile on 1 April 1939, when the last of the Republican forces surrendered to the Nationalist rebels, led in part by Generalísimo Francisco Franco, ending the Spanish Civil War.

1930s Spain was a large country in the Iberia region of Southwest Europe. They made up about 85% of the Iberian Peninsula. It is made up of 15 states in the game, including those in Africa. They have multiple important borders to bodies of water, such as the Mediterranean Sea, Strait of Gibraltar, Atlantic Ocean and Bay of Biscay. This also means, obviously, that they are not landlocked. Spain has land borders with Portugal, France and the United Kingdom (in Gibraltar).

In 1936, the Second Spanish Republic is riven by internal divisions that proves to be increasingly intractable. As such, a civil war is inevitable and the player can only choose between supporting either the Nationalist Spain or the Republican Spain Republicans. Specifically, a countdown will commence after the scheduled elections in February 1936, and the civil war will break out once the timer expires. It is in the interest of the Republican player to delay the civil war as long as possible via decisions so as to gather the maximum possible strength to fight against the Nationalists.

Mainland Spain is very uneven, with 45 percent of it being covered by the Meseta Plateau. The plateau is rarely flat, with many uneven hills, mountains and highlands. Spain contains many significant and beautiful mountains, with the most known being the massive Pyrenees. This mountain range virtually creates the Spanish-French border in the North and has many peaks reaching over 3,000 meters. There is also the Sierra Nevada, a medium-sized mountain range in Andalusia that contains the highest point in continental Spain. There are many other rocky areas. There is also the fertile Andalusian Plain and other basins. There are many large coastal plains, with bays, coves and sandy beaches.

This act removed his brother Infante Carlos from the line of succession, and so, upon the King's death, supporters of Infante Carlos ignited a series of civil wars, uniting under the banner of Carlism and fighting for the reinstatement of the Salic line of succession.

+
A century later, the Carlist movement is still very much alive, and its militas, called Requetés, train unceasingly in preparation for the time where they will once more be needed to defend Christianity and champion the return of the rightful King.

{{Effectbox|Military Disloyalty|The failed "Sanjurjada" military coup attempt in 1932 still casts it shadow over the Spanish military to this day. In the aftermath, various disloyal military commanders, among them the coup's leader José Sanjurjo, fled to exile in Portugal and continue their plotting even now.

+
Even this failure has not discouraged disloyal officers, however, as even within Spain itself many desire to see a return to a Monarchy, or even a strong Fascist dictatorship. Too strong meddling by the government in the internal affairs of the military may well spark yet another uprising; far more violent and bloody than the last.

{{Effectbox|Political Violence|The Spanish political scene is one of increasing polarization and violence. Only two years have elapsed since the last big uprising, the Asturias Miners' Strike, and the current political climate appears to have all the makings of a new, far larger and far less localized uprising. It seems unlikely that the upcoming elections will put an end to this downward spiral of societal unrest.

Spain also has many African and island colonies, specifically owning a large strip of land below Gibraltar in Spanish Morocco. Spain also controls the Canary Islands off the coast of Northwest Africa and the Rio de Oro region of modern-day Morocco. Finally, they also have the small colonial territory of Equatorial Guinea.

; Industry
+
: Republican Spain starts with a modest industrial base and its factories scattered throughout the entire country.
+
; Resources
+
: Republican Spain starts with a moderate amount of steel and tungsten and virtually nothing else. Note that some of its steel is located in Spanish Africa, an occupied state; as such, only a fraction of the steel is available for use at game start.

+
Military
+
Republican Spain starts the game in 1936 with a relatively small army, a mid-sized navy, albeit outdated, and a small air force. As a result of the national spirit Military Disloyalty, the player cannot modify the military in any way until the civil war breaks out. Overall, it has a total manpower of 324.76K, of which 124.30K is tied up in the army, 17.67K in the navy, 1.74K in the air force, and 3.90K in garrison, leaving 198.72K available for recruitment.

Staying true to historical Spain can be quite difficult, especially when German and Italian volunteers are with them. Although you have the Soviets on your side, they could start the Great Purge, crippling their effectiveness. Thus, you should end the war before the great purge. If lucky, they won't start immediately. The real challenge is to prepare for the civil war.

Since it can take place at any time after february 1936, the first thing the player should do is to pile up the navy in the mediterranean and train them with Soviet oil. This way, you'll guarantee trade routes with the Soviets.

When receiving the event, delete all factories except for the ones that the Communist control (excluding a pocket in the north). Flag of Republican Spain Republican Spain is a minor power located on the Iberian Peninsula, bordering Flag of Portugal Portugal to the west, Flag of France France to the northeast, the Mediterranean Sea around the south to the west, the Atlantic Ocean to the north and northwest, and the Flag of United Kingdom United Kingdom by its colonial holding of Gibraltar. Republican Spain also borders France via Spain's colonial holdings in Spanish Africa, Rio de Oro and Equatorial Guinea.

Geography[edit]

Spain lies in Southwestern Europe, with most of its land being on the Iberian peninsula. 1930s Spain also comprises the Balearic Islands and African territory and Islands. Parts of North Africa, namely the Rio de Oro region of modern-day Marocco, Western Sahara, Equatorial Guinea and the Canary Islands off the coast of Northwest Africa is owned and controlled by Spain.

Spain shares a long border with its neighbor Flag of Portugal Portugal which makes up the rest of the Iberian peninsular. It borders Flag of France France in the north, with the tall Pyrenees mountain range making a natural border between the two nations and in the south through their African colonies. Spain also borders Flag of United Kingdom United Kingdom in the south with British controlled Gibraltar.

Spain has multiple important borders to bodies of water, such as the Mediterranean Sea, Strait of Gibraltar, Atlantic Ocean and Bay of Biscay.

Historical background[edit]

Following the Provisional Government between April and December 1931, the 1931 Constitution effectively established the Republic. The Spanish Republic is generally divided in three eras, the First Biennium, the Dark Biennium, and the Popular Front government.

The Second Spanish Republic was proclaimed when King Alfonso XIII left the country following municipal elections in which leftist candidates won the majority of votes, and the Spanish population celebrated the beginning of the Second Republic and social pressure made the political regime change. Niceto Alcalá-Zamora became the President, but the victory of the left-wing was nullified in 1934, when José Maria Gil-Robles of the right-wing CEDA faction was swept into power, and started to purge the military of leftists. In 1936, Manuel Azaña of the Popular Front, a coalition of left-wingers, narrowly became the President, and the right-wing officers in the military plotted a coup which took place in July 1936. The Republican government went into exile on 1 April 1939, when the last of the Republican forces surrendered to the Nationalist rebels, led in part by Generalísimo Francisco Franco, ending the Spanish Civil War.

National focus[edit]

Republican Spanish National Focus Tree.
Main article: Republican Spanish national focus tree

Flag of Republican Spain Republican Spain gets a unique focus tree as with the La Résistance La Résistance expansion. Without the expansion, it utilizes the Generic national focus tree instead.

The Nationalist Spanish national focus tree can be divided into 12 sections. 1 pre civil war branch leading into 3 main branches and 2 shared branches. A post civil war sub-branch can be split from each of these branches. The post civil war Communist Branch can be divided into 2 separate sub branches:

The Popular Front Branch
This pre-Spanish Civil War branch gives Republican Spain army battalions when the Civil War begins as well as disadvantages to the Flag of Nationalist Spain Nationalists. It also gives political power. These focuses take longer than the Nationalist pre-war focuses so it is in the player's best interest to extend the pre-civil war preparations until all the focuses are complete (The final focus will start the civil war).
Flag of Anarchist SpainRegional Defense Council of Aragon Branch
The AnarchistAnarchist branch of the focus tree allows beneficial modifiers to the Anarchist Society Anarchist Society national spirit as well as the special Collectivized SocietyCollectivized Society economy law and "Council" government advisors. This branch also creates an Anarchist civil war in Flag of Portugal Portugal which may lead to its annexation and coring of all its core states.
Torchbearers of Tomorrow Sub-branch
Once the Spanish Civil War is over, Flag of Anarchist Spain Anarchist Spain may rebuild its economy in preparation for future wars. This branch also gives bonuses to war goal justification time and decisions to create anarchist uprisings in foreign nations as well as the coring of states with high compliance.
Flag of Anarchist SpainFlag of Communist SpainInternational Brigades/Seize the Gold Reserves Branch
This branch is shared between Flag of Anarchist Spain Anarchists and Flag of Communist Spain Communists. It allows a weekly manpower boost during the civil war, the seizure of gold reserves for factory output and factories and will lead to another front against the rival ideology within the Republican side of the Civil War. It is required in order to progress through the focus tree.
Collective Recovery Efforts Sub-branch
Once the Civil War is over, Spain can take the Collective Recovery Efforts focus Collective Recovery Efforts focus in order to progress to the rest of the post civil war focuses. The other two focuses give bonuses to the navy.
Flag of Communist SpainThe Anti-Fascist Worker's Revolution Branch
The CommunistCommunist Branch of the focus tree splits into two sections. The left path allows the creation of a CommunistCommunist alliance against the Flag of Soviet Union Soviet Union and the creation of Flag of Communist Spain The Spanish Commune. This allows the ability to take the focuses shared with the Flag of Anarchist Spain Anarchists and the All Must Do Their Part Sub-branch. The right path allows the alliance with the Flag of Soviet Union Soviet Union and the creation of Flag of Communist Spain The People's Republic of Spain. This allows the ability to take the focuses shared with the Flag of Republican Spain Republicans and the Red Bulwark in the West Sub-branch.The center of the branch is shared with both paths and allows bonuses in the industry. The Focus Increase Arms Production focus Increase Arms Production may be taken by the Flag of Republican Spain Republicans if they take the Increase Arms Production focus Communists in the Government focus.
All Must Do Their Part Sub-branch
This post civil war sub-branch allows Flag of Communist Spain The Spainish Commune to recover from the Spanish Civil War, make an alliance with other CommunistCommunist nations not in Asia, and get war goals against every European FascistFascist nation, Flag of Mexico Mexico and the Flag of Soviet Union Soviet Union.
Red Bulwark in the West Sub-branch
This post civil war sub-branch allows Flag of Communist Spain The People's Republic of Spain to try to increase its autonomy if it is a puppet of the Flag of Soviet Union Soviet Union, gain war goals on Flag of Portugal Portugal, Flag of France France and all other nations who sent volunteers to the Flag of Nationalist Spain Nationalist side. This sub-branch is also shared with Flag of Republican Spain Republican Spain if they take the Increase Arms Production focus Communists in the Government focus and may be done before the civil war is over this way.
Flag of Communist SpainFlag of Republican SpainStrengthen the Euzko Gudarostea Branch
This branch is shared between the Flag of Communist Spain Communists and the Flag of Republican Spain Republicans. It seeks aid from the Flag of Soviet Union Soviet Union for the civil war and in return, Spain will become a puppet under them. It also creates a third faction in the civil war from the Flag of Anarchist Spain Anarchists.
Soviet Recovery Aid Sub-branch
This post civil war sub-branch further increases military development if the Spain is still in a faction with the Flag of Soviet Union Soviet Union.
Flag of Republican SpainMaintain the Second Republic Branch
The DemocraticDemocratic branch allows Flag of Republican Spain Republican Spain to increase StabilityStability and military strength. It also asks Flag of France France's help in lend lease. Spain may Oppose the Communists focus Oppose the Communists which leads to independence from the Flag of Soviet Union Soviet Union and allows Spain to stay Democratic. Spain may also allow Communists in the Government focus Communists in the Government which will allow Spain to become CommunistCommunist and take the Increase Arms Production focus Increase Arms Production and the Red Bulwark in the West Sub-branch in the Flag of Communist Spain Communist side of the focus tree.
Subvert Soviet Control/Stabilize the Nation/Restore Higher Education Sub-branch
This post civil war branch allows Flag of Republican Spain Republican Spain to declare war for independence against the Flag of Soviet Union Soviet Union with the aid of either the DemocraticDemocratic nations or Flag of Germany Germany and Flag of Italy Italy. It also increases military capability and allows Spain to join in the war against the FascistFascist majors.

Technology[edit]

Republican Spain starts with 3 research slots, and can gain 2 more slots from its national focuses. Regardless of the faction the player ultimately backs, one of the research slots will require owning more than 50 factories to unlock.

Politics[edit]

In 1936, the Second Spanish Republic is riven by internal divisions that proves to be increasingly intractable. As such, a civil war is inevitable and the player can only choose between supporting either the Flag of Nationalist Spain Nationalists or the Flag of Republican Spain Republicans. Specifically, a countdown will commence after the scheduled elections in February 1936, and the civil war will break out once the timer expires. It is in the interest of the Republican player to delay the civil war as long as possible via decisions so as to gather the maximum possible strength to fight against the Nationalists.

National spirits[edit]

Without La RésistanceLa Résistance, Republican Spain does not have National Spirits.
With La RésistanceLa Résistance, before the Spanish Civil War, Spain will have the following national spirits:

Carlism icon
Carlism
  • Weekly StabilityStability: -0.30%
  • Division Attack: -10.0%
  • Division Defense: -10.0%
  • Daily Support for UnalignedUnaligned: +0.05
In 1830 King Ferdinand VII promulgated the Pragmatic Sanction and made his daughter, the future Isabella II, heir presumptive. This act removed his brother Infante Carlos from the line of succession, and so, upon the King's death, supporters of Infante Carlos ignited a series of civil wars, uniting under the banner of Carlism and fighting for the reinstatement of the Salic line of succession.

A century later, the Carlist movement is still very much alive, and its militas, called Requetés, train unceasingly in preparation for the time where they will once more be needed to defend Christianity and champion the return of the rightful King.

Military Disloyalty icon
Military Disloyalty
  • Military Leader Cost: +100.0%
  • Cannot train units, disband units,
    or edit unit templates.
The failed "Sanjurjada" military coup attempt in 1932 still casts it shadow over the Spanish military to this day. In the aftermath, various disloyal military commanders, among them the coup's leader José Sanjurjo, fled to exile in Portugal and continue their plotting even now.

Political Violence icon
Political Violence
  • StabilityStability: -15.00%
  • Cannot Assign Ministers & Laws: Yes
The Spanish political scene is one of increasing polarization and violence. Only two years have elapsed since the last big uprising, the Asturias Miners' Strike, and the current political climate appears to have all the makings of a new, far larger and far less localized uprising. It seems unlikely that the upcoming elections will put an end to this downward spiral of societal unrest.
National Strikes icon
National Strikes
  • StabilityStability: -10.00%
  • Construction Speed: -10.00%
  • Factory Output: -10.00%
  • Dockyard Output: -10.00%
The country finds itself seemingly in the grips of the starting stages of a workers' revolution; strike upon strike paralyze the industry and daily life as workers demand less work and more pay, and poor tenant farmers increasingly appropriate farmland while the government turns a blind eye.

When the Spanish Civil War fires, the above spirits will be removed and Republican Spain will obtain the following national spirits:

Death Before Surrender icon
Death Before Surrender
  • Surrender Limit: +100.00%
  • Minimum Surrender Limit: +15.00%
Disbanded Army icon
Disbanded Army
  • Division Attack: -10.0%
  • Division Defense: -5.0%
  • Planning Speed: -20.0%
  • Max planning: -20.0%
  • Maximum Command Power Increase: -50
  • Daily Command Power Gain Multiplier: -20%
The army has proven its disloyalty and has been disbanded by the government. Until we make the loyalty of our officers certain we must rely on people's militias rather than a professional army.

If the player follows the Flag of Anarchist Spain Anarchist path, Republican Spain will obtain the following national spirit:

Anarchist Society icon
Anarchist Society
Weekly StabilityStability: -1.00%

When the Spanish Civil War ends, Republican Spain may obtain the following national spirit:

Recovering From Civil War icon
Recovering From Civil War
  • Consumer Goods Factories: +10%
  • Construction Speed: -10.00%
  • Factory Output: -20.00%
  • Dockyard Output: -20.00%
  • Join Faction Tension Limit: +50.0%
Spain is currently focused on rebuilding the country and less willing to join a faction.

Diplomacy[edit]

Republican Spain is a mostly neutral country, with all diplomacy values revolving around "Different Ideology", "Same Ideology" and "Same Ruling Party". They do not have any special relations with countries, but that will change quickly especially with the civil war.
